Determine where the fault is and whose responsibility it is

BT no longer perform a straight forward online line checker. If your line is direct with BT and you do not have log in details dial 0800800154 and get it tested. It will mostly likely be a call centre in Chennai so be patient and clear as the understanding can be challenging.

If your supplier is not BT Retail it should be easier since your supplier should have direct testing facilities on Openreach’s WLR3 platform.

In all cases ensure you get a fault reference from them.

A word of warning here – most fault checks return ‘no fault found’. In many cases this will not be the case and it is then best to take matters in hand.

We recommend in all cases you perform some simple tests yourself. In most cases a simple telephone and star & cross headed screwdriver is all that’s required read more Locate the master socket.

Its important that the line is isolated from all other wiring and equipment connected.

The master socket should be an NTE5 or if with integral ADSL / VDSL filter an NTE5 A B or C – see here Having unscrewed and removed the bottom section of the faceplate the test socket should be exposed. Aside from the main incoming line this should have no other wiring attached to it. Attach your plain ordinary telephone.

If the line is dead / no dial tone contact your supplier – it is their responsibility. If the line is working dial 17070 and press option 2 – quiet line test. If there is noise on the line contact your supplier – it is their responsibility. If the line is fine and faulty with the plate reinserted it is down to you.

Fixing problematic and faulty wiring

Most common causes of wiring faults are water & moisture ingress or faulty equipment. If you are confident to tackle this read more or contact us.

Broadband related faults

Having established the line is healthy (above)  and the broadband is not it is very important to rule out anything your end.

Tip: it is very rare for the issue to be the Internet Service Provider (ISP) -over 99% of broadband faults are the line or the subscribers equipment. 

On the test jack socket of your master socket Check in this sequence >  connect the router > is it the same (on most routers you should have a solid green DSP light) > swap the filter in the test socket > patch your laptop into an Ethernet port on the router to ensure it is not a WiFi issue > Change the router (you will need the log on details from your ISP aka Radius details for this.  

To rule out your ISP you can also enter these details user > bt_test_user@startup_domain > password- leave blank or random characters > . The bt_test login bypasses connection with your ISP and allows you to browse to the test site   Open browser and go to http://www.bt.net/digitaldemo

An ISP telephone engineer arranged callout out will cost you a minimum £150 +VAT.

ISDN2e & ISDN30 faults

ISDN lines generally connect to phone systems or PBX for voice services.  If you have a line go down <   > you need to determine if the line is at fault or your equipment to save on expensive Openreach call outs.

Locate the NTE (network termination equipment). ISDN2e – when working properly the central green light should be steady.

Unplug the connecting lead or switch off your system;  with nothing connected it should flash green slowly. If not or its not lit at all it is almost certainly a network fault and contact your service provider.

ISDN30 –This is what the BT ISDN30 NTE should look like when working properly.

Prior to that the DSL1 light would be  flashing and the BT light red – indicative of an exchange (BT) issue.

If the cust light is on it is indicative of it being customer equipment ( your phone system)
